Safeguarding Children and Young People: Roles and Competencies for Healthcare Staff

Key Themes

  • Refresh and assessment learning outcomes at level 1 & 2.
  • Key Legislation and statutory guidance and their impact.
  • Mental Capacity Act, confidentiality, and information sharing.
  • Consent including parental responsibility and looked after children.
  • The assessment of risk, making judgements and effective referrals.
  • SUDICA and forensic awareness.
  • Maintaining CPD including peer reviews, supervision and contribution to multidisciplinary teams and agencies.

Intended Audience

This course is designed to meet the levels of competencies set out in the intercollegiate framework, specifically:
“Level 3: all clinical staff working with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and evaluating the health needs of a looked after child/young person or care leaver”.

Whilst it is a requirement for paramedics to be able to evidence having met these learning outcomes, we believe that there is no ‘rank’ when it comes to safeguarding. The course design and learning outcomes are applicable to all staff working in a patient facing role within the pre-hospital care environment.
